Marriage License Requirements
- Must be 18 or older. If between 16 and 17, the legal parent or guardian
that the applicant lives with must sign and show some proof of identification.
A child under 16 years of age cannot be married in NC unless a court
order is obtained.
- Both applicants must appear personally in the Register of Deeds office.
- Both must have a picture ID and some form of established proof
of social security number. (Social Security card is preferred.) A certified
birth record may be used in place of picture ID, but not a hospital
birth record.
- Applicants must marry within the boundaries of Cherokee County within
60 days, or same day as issuance of license.
- If previously married, applicants must give month/day/year of last
marriage, whether by death or divorce.
- The license fee is $50.00 (cash only).
- The couple must be married by an ordained minister or magistrate,
and the license must be returned within 10 days (which is the responsibility
of the officiate.)
- We do not mail the certificate until notified by the newlyweds.
