Fire Inspection
A Division of Emergency Services
The position of Fire Marshall/Fire Inspection was created in 1996 with
a primary goal of enforcing the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code as
mandated by the State. Additional functions include acting as liaison
between County Administration and the thirteen volunteer fire departments
of the County and providing assistance with fire investigation.

FIRE PREVENTION CODE ENFORCEMENT
As defined by the Administration and Enforcement Requirements of the
State Building Code, "the provisions of the Fire Prevention Code
shall apply to the repair, equipment, use, occupancy, and maintenance
of every existing building or structure, other than one or two family
dwellings and townhouses. The provisions of the fire prevention code shall
apply to the installation of fire protection systems for all buildings
or structures, when required by code."
Code enforcement includes plan review and acceptance inspection of new
fire suppression and life safety systems and conducting inspections for
compliance of the Fire Prevention Code in existing occupancies as required
by the Code.
The minimum inspection schedule required by the Fire Prevention Code
is as follows:
Once every year
- Hazardous
- Institutional
- High Rise
- Assembly
- Residential except one and two family dwellings and only interior
common areas of dwelling units of multi-family occupancies
Once every two years
- Industrial
- Educational (except public schools)
Once every three years
- Business
- Mercantile
- Storage
Public schools twice each school year
- The inspection schedule for public schools is a statutory requirement.
Public school must be inspected for both fire and electrical hazards
twice during each school year at least 120 days apart.
Private and commercial facilities are required to pay a user fee for
inspections.
